AulaMèdia AulaMèdia presentation – Alba Ambròs [Chief Editor] -  AulaMèdia is a monthly free-access on-line magazine about Educating in Communication (EC, the same as Media Literacy) issued in Catalonia. It is promoted by the AulaMèdia association which is formed by teachers, educators and communicators under the coordination of  Francesc-Josep Deó.
AulaMèdia
The first issue was released in May 2001. This month, May 2007, a total of 60 issues are being published. AulaMèdia receives an average of 60.000 monthly viewings and has got 22.000 subscriptions. We have recently exceeded the figure of one million viewings. You may click here.

AulaMèdia magazine was conceived as a tool to reflect upon the need to Educate in Communication in the 21st century. The information society in which live enhances a variety of communicative systems which respond to different symbolic alphabets. Consequently, the purposes of this magazine are twofold: a learning approach based on the languages in media literacy and a critical analysis of contents in messages. The Spanish syllabus designed both by the MEC and the Catalan Government has proved to be ineffective and inadequate as far as Educating in Communication is concerned. To redress this, AulaMèdia, in a constant effort to serve education, illustrates a great variety of real experiences carried out in multi-level classes with cinema, television, radio, press, etc. They are the proof that EC is possible in the school. Every month, the magazine displays a wide range of ideas, experiences and useful proposals for the education community.

FòrumAs well as issuing the EC magazine, AulaMèdia organises annual face-to-face meetings focused on a monographic field within EC. Some of the titles are: Una educació crítica davant la television (A critical education towards television, 2005); L’anàlisi crítica i la producció escolar  (Critical analysis and school production, 2004); El futur de l’Educació en Comunicació (The future of Educating in Communication, 2003), etc. In the same line, an EC Forum was held in the city of Barcelona, September 6-8, 2005.

II Escola d'EstiuIn consonance with the spirit of AulaMèdia, the magazine also organises training sessions, talks and seminars addressed to teachers, parents and teenagers. Last summer we started off the first Summer School for teachers, which was a tremendous success in terms of participation, -and a great personal satisfaction-, and now we are finalising the arrangements for the second one. You may click here.

On a different line which exclusively focuses on parents, AulaMèdia organises talks for parents who are interested in EC through the Parents Associations in schools (AMPAS). Finally, workshops about production aimed at teenagers are taking place in local televisions in villages that collaborate with us.

AulaMèdia also coordinates two more monographic websites, namely EduCom.info Education and Local Communication and CinEscola.info. The former opened on 15th October 2004 to provide schools interested in EC local mass media collaboration (television and radio). The latter, inaugurated on 10th February 2005 and coordinated by Ramon Breu, is a free cinema website that provides didactic proposals for teachers to work on films in Primary and Secondary classes following the “CinEscola” pattern of film analysis.

In May 2007 Ramon Breu and Alba Ambròs have published a book called Cinema and Education. The cinema in Primary and Secondary School, that has been released in Catalan and Spanish version for Graó editorial.

Finally, AulaMèdia is also involved in Media Production. In 2005 we started a DVD collection about the principles of Educating in Communication. The first DVD was called “Educar en Comunicació”. In January 2007, we presented another one about cinema for Primary and Secondary schools: "El cinema a l'aula".

Why teach cinema in the classroom? The answer to this is a convincing one: films are a crucial tool of inspiration which promote basic academic tasks such as comprehension, the development of ideas, the reasoning process, interpretation and critical analysis. EuroMediaLireracy

The Charter for Media Literacy exists to support the establishment of media literacy across Europe. By signing the Charter, organisations and individuals endorse a specific definition of media literacy, and commit to actions that will contribute to its development. The Charter thus facilitates consensus and networking amongst those working for media literacy in different countries across Europe. EuroMediaLireracy

Media Literacy
The media are a very powerful economic and social force. The media sector is also an accessible instrument for European citizens to better understand the societies in which they live and participate in the democratic life. Hence a higher degree of media literacy can significantly contribute to reaching the objective set for the European Union at the Lisbon European Council on 23 and 24 March 2000 by the Heads of State and Government in particular as regards a more competitive knowledge economy, while contributing to a more inclusive society.Europa

The Media Education Programme promotes research into, and an understanding of, the role and the effects of the media upon society. It seeks new ways in which people can enhance their participation in the political and cultural life of the general community through the media.
With an expanding media worldwide, and with the increasing use of new information and communication technologies -particularly in education- the objective of this programme is to develop an awareness of, and a debate about, the media's effects upon society and its role within it. UNESCO
